Discover the Desert: The Driest Place on Earth

WInner of a 2010 Skipping Stones Honor Award for Nature and Ecology Books

Author Kathy Ceceri's new book program Discover the Desert shows kids what it’s like to visit the desert with hands-on demonstrations and displays. Although the book is written for ages 9-12, this program is suitable for ages 7 and up. It can also be adapted for younger children with adult caregivers. Here’s what the program can include:

  • a talk about how I managed to write a book about the desert -- and try out desert survival techniques -- during a Northeast winter, plus some of the fascinating facts I learned;
  • demonstrations of many of the activities in the book, which can include a cactus planter, triops shrimp tank, mirage simulator, skin gel from an aloe vera plant, and tasty samples of yogurt cheese;
  • hands-on activities can include trying on desert clothing, practicing desert navigation techniques, and building an indoor version of a desert shelter. Outside activities are also possible, such as melting chocolate in solar cookers and using a shadow-stick directional finder;
And kids can also get to make a take-home craft project such as a sand art bottle.
